Rafał Jędraszyk Historian at the Jagiellonian University, traveler, writer, scholar, mountaineer. ![]() He has been missing since 24th May, 2002. He has disappeared in the region between Lake Van and the Ararat massif in Turkey. While his stay in Turkey, he was to make a documentary film about concerning the Events of the year 1915. The film, with the expected title "Karabach Story" was to be made in cooperation with TVP (Polish Public TV) and a private Armenian TV "Lotos". During the period of 2 years, the Turkish Government and Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs have only managed to find out that Rafał has not left the Turkish territory. In this situation, the Family and friends were forced to look for Rafał by themselves on the strength of cooperation with the private people (here, we would like to express our gratitude everybody) and the Polish MFA. At this point it is necessary to highlight that within the last 2 weeks the Turkish Embassy in Poland represented by Mr Ambassador Candan Azer has declared tentatively willingness to cooperate with Rafał's Family and us, his friends, in further search. In our special letter, we have turned to the Turkish side for help in case we decided to go to Turkey in search of Rafał by ourselves. We hope that the Turkish Authorities will find themselves bound with their assurance. At present our journey to Turkey is at a phase of finalization the preparations. Mr President, Aleksander Kwa?niewski, and the Chancellor of the Jagiellonian University, Prof. Franciszek Ziejka have also intervened in Rafał's case to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We have also turned for help to His Eminence Cardinal Franciszek Macharski. Mr. Jan M. Rokita, a Member of Parliament, is also interested in Rafał's case. Rafał set out on his journey from Zakopane, Poland on the 7th May 2002. He reached Turkey on the 11th May, on his way crossing the Slovakian, Hungarian, Romanian and Bulgarian borders. On the 13th of May in Polish Embassy in Ankara, Rafał was trying to obtain a letter of recommendation to Azerbaijanian (at that time, Rafał has already possessed visas to Georgia, Armenia and Iran, therefore, any suggestions that our friend might have crossed the Turkish and Georgian border illegally is just a product of a sick imagination). At the same time Rafał wrote a postcard to his friend from Poronin, Bronek, and he called his parents, informing them that everything was fine and according to the plan. The content of the received postcard is fully available to confirmation. On the 20th May 2002 Rafał was waiting in Ankara for a train to Tatvan where, going through a town called Gevas, he was planning to reach 15 km distant monastery in Narek. Unfortunately we do not know if he reached that place before his last contact with his parents (24th May). When Rafał was talking on the phone to his parents, he said that he had spent 7 days at the monks. He also promised he would call next week. Description Height: 182 cm; weight: 65 kg; hair: dark, short; age: At present 29; clothes: light-coloured trousers (camouflage type), a jacket (Alpinus), the same brand of his rucksack and tent. He spoke Russian abroad. Peculiarities: Rafał has a slight stammer. Every person who knows anything about Rafał Jędraszyk's disappearance is asked to contact us or the Family (phone numbers and addresses are given below). Even the smallest trace is valuable in this situation. Perhaps some of you have seen, taken (transported), spoken to him or traveled with him.
